Police Scotland have advised local residents near to a large fire in Linwood to remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed for the time being.

Officers said this information has been released as a precaution.

A large plume of smoke is currently over the greater Renfrewshire area after a large fire broke out at a battery recycling centre at Linwood Industrial Estate at around 7.00pm on Sunday.

Burnbrae Road in Linwood is currently closed at the Linclive roundabout.

Glasgow Airport has confirmed flights are not being affected by smoke from the fire which is only 4 miles from the airport.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said no casualties had been reported.

Police Scotland said: “Burnbrae Road in Linwood, Paisley is currently closed at the Linclive Interchange due to an ongoing fire within the Linwood Industrial Estate. The cycle path behind the industrial estate has also been closed.

“Emergency services are in attendance and members of the public are asked to avoid the area until further notice.

“As a precaution, local residents are asked to remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed for the time being.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At its height, Operations Control mobilised ten fire appliances to the scene to tackle and contain a well developed fire affecting a commercial building in an industrial area.

“There are no reported casualties at this time. Crews remain in attendance.”
