The Scottish Government must “not let £100million slip through its fingers” by failing to take the opportunity of the Commonwealth Games, Scottish Labour has warned.
Minister Neil Gray failed to confirm that the Scottish Government backed the Commonwealth Games bid when questioned about its position on Tuesday by Scottish Labour’s Culture and Sport Spokesperson Neil Bibby.
The Commonwealth Games Federation submitted a £114million proposal to the Scottish Government in May based on £100million direct investment from the Federation, with the remaining £14million covered by commercial opportunities.
In order to be cost-effective, the Games would be based on a new and innovative model, using existing accommodation and sporting venues.
As well as being cost-neutral to the Scottish Government, it is estimated the Games will inject a further £150million into the economy in terms of jobs, tourism and procurement contracts.
Neil Bibby, MSP for West Scotland, said: “This is potentially a fantastic opportunity for Glasgow and neighbouring areas such as Renfrewshire that the Scottish Government should be seizing with both hands.
“This is a unique opportunity to boost Glasgow’s economy, upgrade our sports facilities and promote Brand Scotland, not to mention introduce a new generation to the excitement of elite sport on their doorstep.
“The Scottish Government must not let this £100millon of inward investment slip through its fingers – this is the time to show ambition and make sure we secure the Commonwealth Games before it’s too late.”
