Cllr Will Mylet met with staff and trustees of Shopmobility Renfrewshire as they outlined their plans for the future including ongoing hire of mobility equipment, repair of such equipment, social inclusion events and providing advocacy support to people in Renfrewshire with mobility difficulties.
As one of the local councillors covering the location of Shopmobility Renfrewshire’s Paisley base, they also outlined their continuing social inclusion events which are aimed at encouraging people to mix within their communities, and in doing so tackling mental health and wellbeing problems that can arise from social isolation.
Currently Shopmobility Renfrewshire are organising some social inclusion events using funding from the National Lottery but are hoping to be successful in their application to the council’s Winter Connections fund.
Councillor Will Mylet said: “I was delighted to visit Shopmobility Renfrewshire, to hear first-hand and see their plans for the future including an excellent project for the council’s Winter Connections.
“Although I was well aware of the great work carried out by Shopmobility Renfrewshire, this was a great opportunity to meet the team and see them in action. It really is a well organised and professional operation. I am not surprised that they won the best Shopmobility centre in the UK after seeing them in operation and I was impressed by the work that they do and their plans for the future.
“I was especially interested in any funding they receive locally and what I could do to help. I looked at their application for Winter Connections funding and it seemed an excellent proposal – providing food, a warm place to meet and some crafting lessons by a very experienced crafter. Holding events like this help to encourage people to come together and to tackle the problem of loneliness and isolation.
Karen Miller, Shopmobility Renfrewshire’s Office Manager, added: “It was great to meet Will and he seemed very keen to help and support us. He understood the problems people with mobility difficulties face – with his mother-in-law recently needing support from him and a wheelchair from us. We are very grateful for the support we will receive from Will and other councillors who have visited us.”
