Thousands of children from disadvantaged backgrounds will benefit from free breakfasts, due to to £3 million from the Scottish Government.
Announced in the draft Budget for 2025-26, Bright Start Breakfasts will help more primary school children get a healthy start to the day.
The initiative will also provide families with childcare, supporting more parents to get to work in the morning.
This investment will build on the current breakfast provision in place, with nearly half of Scotland’s schools already providing access to food before the start of the school day.
Natalie Don-Innes who is the government Minister for Children, Young People and the Promise, and MSP Renfrewshire North & West, said: “The Scottish Government’s key mission is to eradicate child poverty and these new breakfast clubs are a crucial part of this mission.
“It is well known how important a health breakfast is for children, especially those who are most at risk of poverty. This new fund will help establish breakfast clubs which will set up children for the day allowing them to focus on their learning.
“The Scottish Budget builds on the support already in place by introducing Bright Start Breakfasts as well as looking to lift the two-child benefit cap, expand free school meals and essentially giving families across Scotland vital support through the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.”
