A pensioner has been cleared of killing a woman as she crossed the road.
William McKenna, 65, was behind the wheel of a black Fiat Panda at the time of the incident in Baljaffray Road in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire close to a Lidl supermarket.
Morven Macaskill, 37, sadly died having suffered fatal injuries.
McKenna, of Paisley, had denied a charge of causing death by dangerous driving at a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.
The accusation included claims he had not been keeping a proper lookout on the road ahead and had failed to stop at a pedestrian crossing displaying amber then red lights.
Jurors today found the charge against McKenna – defended by advocate Callum Hiller – not proven after a number of days of evidence.
Lord Scott told McKenna: “You have been acquitted by verdict of the jury and you are now free to leave the dock.”
Relatives of Miss Macaskill were present.
One young woman appeared emotional and left the courtroom following the verdict.
Lord Scott told the jury: “These cases are amongst the most difficult these courts have to deal with.”
The trial heard McKenna held his licence since 1998 and had regularly driven in the area where the accident happened.
He had called the police as soon as he realised what occurred.
Mr Hiller had put to him in his evidence that the suggestion may be he should have “paid better attention” to the crossing signals.
But, McKenna insisted he had been watching and the road had been “clear” as he approached and that he “did not see anything”.
He said what happened to Miss Macaskill “certainly preys on your mind”.
