A Renfrewshire councillor is urging for more to be done to protect historic buildings and heritage across Renfrewshire.

Scottish Conservative and Unionist Councillor James MacLaren had a motion agreed at a meeting of the full council yesterday which “lamented” the loss of the territorial army building in Paisley.

The motion also called on the Scottish Government to carry out an urgent review of listed building regulations.

The Bridge of Weir, Bishopton and Langbank ward representative used his speech to say that Renfrewshire has lost countless listed buildings including the old Paisley prison, Paton’s mill in Johnstone and Hermiston house in Bridge of Weir.

He suggested that the council could look to set up a trust, which would operate similarly to the National Trust.

It would apply for funding, accept donations and be bequeathed money, which could be used to buy or repair listed buildings.

He has also asked Renfrewshire Council how community purchase orders could be used to obtain buildings under land reform legislation.

Councillor James MacLaren said: “I am pleased that there was cross-party agreement that we need to do more to protect our historic buildings across Renfrewshire.

“We have a treasure trove of fantastic heritage in the area but sadly far too much of it is continuing to be lost.

“All too often buildings are just lost bit by bit and become increasingly at risk of fire.

“I don’t want to just sit by and let that happen which is why I brought this motion to a meeting of the full council urging them and the SNP government to do more.

“Up and down Scotland we see the National Trust operating many wonderful properties and attractions and I am keen to explore if a similar style trust could work locally in Renfrewshire.

“I believe there would be appetite among our communities to see these buildings protected and operated under the guidance of local people.

“I hope this can be the first step towards both Renfrewshire Council and the SNP government taking more of an interest in Renfrewshire’s heritage and ensuring measures are in place to protect listed buildings for future generations.”
