A free event by Paisley and District u3a will reveal Renfrewshire’s treasure trove of beautifully designed inter-war buildings.

Conservation architect and historian, Fiona Sinclair will be highlighting several 1930s architectural gems on our doorsteps.

Attendees can learn more about the area’s rich architectural history on Thursday.

Fiona Sinclair remarked: “A surprising amount of construction took place in Renfrewshire during the two world wars. Standout buildings included cinemas, department stores, factories and health facilities.

“These were designed mostly by local architects who had a keen eye for European precedents. They saw no reason why Paisley and its satellite towns should be left behind in the move to modernism.

“I will illustrate the wealth of buildings in Renfrewshire from this particular period of time, and highlight the achievements of some remarkable architects.”

u3a chair, Kathy O’Donnell said: “During the pandemic, many of us had more time to go for walks. It helped us to appreciate various eye-catching buildings around us. I know Fiona is a champion of our local architectural heritage. Her talk will outline several key design styles and what may be done to make important historical buildings sustainable.”

The event will be held on Thursday 3rd April at 2pm in the Salvation Army Hall in Mill Street, Paisley, PA1 1ND. Afterwards guests can enjoy a chat and refreshments from 1.30pm.
