Renfrewshire Liberal Democrats are welcoming their new regional MSP after he defected from the Conservatives at the weekend.
At the Scottish Liberal Democrat conference in Inverness, party leader Alex Cole-Hamilton announced that Jamie Greene MSP had joined the party. This brings the Holyrood group up to 5 MSPs and gives Lib Dems Holyrood representation in West Scotland for the first time since 2011.
Jamie has served in the Scottish Parliament since 2016. He is deputy convener of the Public Audit Committee at Holyrood and Deputy Chair of the Scottish Commission for Public Audit, a non parliamentary board which oversees Audit Scotland. He is also co-convener for cross-party groups on LGBTI+ and Taiwan.
Jamie quit the Scottish Conservatives last Thursday. In a letter to leader Russell Findlay, the West of Scotland MSP said the party had become “Trump-esque in both style and substance” to win over right-wing voters from Nigel Farage’s Reform.
Local party convener Grant Toghill said: “It was great to welcome Jamie to the party and good to see he has found a new home in the Liberal Democrats. I look forward to working with him to continue to fight for issues in Renfrewshire and the wider region.
“Many reasonable voters want rid of the divisive politics and want a party that focus on their community and the key issues. Voters are realising that can get that different path with the Scottish Liberal Democrats.
“With Jamie on our team, Scottish Liberal Democrats will keep making our voices heard on the issues that matter – getting you fast access to health care, lifting up Scottish education and growing our economy.”
