Celebrations were in order for Renfrew Burgh Band recently, as it was crowned Scottish champion following a weekend to remember.
The Renfrewshire brass band stormed to victory by a two-point margin in the Third Section of the Scottish Championships in Perth on Saturday, 8th March 2025.
Renfrew’s flugelhorn player, Shona Jones, received the award for Best Instrumentalist, following her significant contribution to the band’s performance.
Under the baton of musical director Mark Good, Renfrew Burgh Band impressed the two adjudicators with its performance of set test-piece, Arkansas, by Jacob de Haan.
Judge Alan Fernie wrote: “So much to enjoy here – great band, with very good work in the middle, and a performance of real merit from all.
“Thank you.”
Reflecting on the occasion, Mark commented: “I’m over the moon for members of Renfrew Burgh Band, who capped off an intensive period of preparation with a performance of which they could be proud.
“Particular praise is due to flugel player Shona. Her dedication and desire to progress was rewarded with an elegant performance, which earned her the Best Instrumentalist Award.”
Renfrew Burgh Band has now qualified for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in Cheltenham in September, and will earn promotion to the Second Section from January 2026.
Myra Mack, chairperson of Renfrew Burgh Band and a member of the band’s cornet section, said: “The Burgh Band represents Renfrew with pride wherever we go, and we were delighted to bring home the trophy following a very busy period of rehearsals in the build-up.
“The fundraising starts now, as we prepare for the National Finals, which will involve travel and accommodation for our players. We can’t wait to represent Renfrew on the national stage again.”
