Renfrewshire Council staff might be heading for another summer of unrest as they are set to vote on potential strike action.

Unison, the largest trade union representing local government workers, announced yesterday that all of its members in the area will be polled on whether to take industrial action.

This move is the latest escalation in the ongoing dispute over pay and working conditions.

Local government body COSLA has proposed a 3% pay increase for all local government workers for the 2025/26 financial year.

However, union leaders have dismissed the proposal as “pitiful,” arguing that it amounts to a pay cut in real terms. They claim that rising inflation, along with increasing costs for rent, council tax, and energy bills, continues to put pressure on household budgets.

Unison Scotland co-lead for local government David O’Connor said: “This pay offer is at best a thinly veiled pay cut.

“After years of below-inflation pay awards, council wages have plummeted by a fifth. This pitiful offer only adds insult to injury to these essential workers.”
