The fascinating history behind those everyday condiments of salt and vinegar is being prepared for Paisley & District u3a members.
Guest speaker and author, Valerie Reilly also explores why these staples became part of a fish supper. The public can attend this tasty session on Thursday 2nd February. Doors open 1.30pm, with refreshments till 2pm in the Salvation Army Hall, Mill Street, Paisley PA1 1ND.
Yorkshire-born Valerie was a keeper of textiles with Paisley Museum for 35 years. She is an expert in the Paisley Pattern and is also the author of ‘The Illustrated History of the Paisley Shawl’.
u3a chair, Kathy O’Donnell said: “For centuries, many different cultures have used these condiments to complement the flavor of their dishes and drinks. Yet seasonings have other uses. Salt, for example, can soothe a bee sting while taking apple cider vinegar daily may improve your mood. This talk gives our members plenty of food for thought.”
Valerie Reilly added: “My talk is entitled: ‘Not just for your fish and chips – tales of salt and vinegar.’ Apart from sprinkling it on our food, salt has many industrial and religious uses, while vinegar has medicinal, cleaning and horticultural applications.
“I’ll explain the long history of these condiments and something of how they reached our dinner tables.”
