Gavin Newlands has been selected as the Scottish National Party (SNP) candidate for Paisley & Renfrewshire North for the next Westminster elections.
Mr Newlands was first elected in 2015 and subsequently re-elected in 2017 and 2019. He currently serves as the SNP Westminster Shadow Spokesperson for Transport and chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Scottish Sport.
His selection follows an internal nomination and selection process, and Mr Newlands has been selected as the Scottish National Party candidate for Paisley & Renfrewshire North. His nomination was uncontested as no other members were nominated.
Gavin said: “I am proud to have been selected as the SNP candidate for Paisley & Renfrewshire North at the next general election.
“Since being elected in 2015 it has been my privilege to serve the Renfrewshire community.
“With the upcoming changes to the boundaries if re-elected I will get the opportunity to serve the area, I was born into at Seedhill, as well as a portion of Glasgow’s Southside.
“I pride myself in always being approachable and accessible, holding the most surgeries of any MP, hosting 144 surgeries across the constituency annually.
“I am keen to continue to work hard for constituents and to further the cause for independence.”
The next United Kingdom general election is scheduled to be held no later than 28th January 2025.
An internal nomination and selection process is currently taking place in the neighbouring ward of Paisley and Renfrewshire South. MP Mhairi Black has announced she will not be seeking to be re-elected at the next general election.
Renfrewshire Council deputy leader Jacqueline Cameron has publicly announced she is standing. Other members are expected to be nominated and stand. If that is the case, SNP members from the ward will get to vote and select the candidate that will end up on the ballot paper for the SNP.
