Shopmobility Paisley & District have teamed up with Paisley Darkside Historical Tours to deliver a unique history tour in Paisley on Saturday 21st October.

This event, funded by InRen and the National Lottery Community Fund, will focus on the life story of a fascinating man – Peter Burnett – who was the first African American to come to Paisley. He arrived via Virginia, New York, Glasgow, Kilmarnock and finally Paisley. Although born a free man he was aware that any minute he could be enslaved.

The tour will tell the key points of his life including his time as a house boy to military commanders, his life on a pirate ship and his move to Edinburgh when the weaving trade collapsed as well as his unfortunate prison experience and will end up with a visit to his resting place.

The tour will take place in the West End of the town where Peter would have wandered. Castle Street, Maxwellton Street, Well Street, where he lived.

“This tour is free, but you must book a place in advance by emailing shopmobilitypaisley2019@outlook.com.

“This tour about the life of Peter Burnett is part of Black History Month which runs for the whole of October.

“Free wheelchair and mobility scooter hire is available for anyone needing them for this tour.

“The tour will start at 1pm outside Tannahill’s Cottage and will conclude at 2pm at the Loud ‘n’ Proud Music Studio in William Street where all attendees of the tour will be invited into this venue for a light lunch and refreshments and how the opportunity to see the published video of Peter Burnet.

“Places are limited so it is essential to book your place as soon as possible.”
