Navigating (Dis)Belief: Rachelle Atalla & Chris Kohler

Paisley Town Hall

Part of our Life’s Fundamentals series, we’re joined by two novelists whose mind-bending tales ask serious questions about what we truly believe.

Scottish Egyptian writer and screenwriter Rachelle Atalla has been widely praised for her first two novels, The Pharmacist and Thirsty Animals, whilst her latest, The Salt Flats, follows a group of people seeking spiritual enlightenment at a mysterious retreat in the Bolivian salt flats. Will they find what they’re looking for or will this increasingly disorientating odyssey amidst a climate crisis force them to confront truths they’ve been trying to hide?

Chris Kohler is a Glasgow-based writer, whose debut novel, Phantom Limb, follows a failed athlete turned church minister, whose discovery of a disembodied hand in his kirk grounds is made worse when it starts to move! The fantastical journey that ensues towards salvation serves only to highlight the disenfranchised state of a post-industrial, faithless society and the oppressive weight of history that still hangs overhead.
