Rangers Football Club have confirmed the appointment of German coach Danny Rohl as their new men\u2019s first-team head coach on an initial two-and-a-half-year deal.<\/p>\n
The 35-year-old joins the Ibrox side after a successful spell at Sheffield Wednesday, where he earned widespread praise for transforming the club\u2019s fortunes. Rohl took charge of the Owls in October 2023 with the team bottom of the Championship and winless in 11 matches, guiding them to safety and then an impressive 12th-place finish last season.<\/p>\n
Rohl\u2019s coaching career began in Germany with RB Leipzig, where he quickly rose through the ranks before becoming assistant to Ralph Hasenh\u00fcttl \u2014 first at Leipzig and later at Southampton. In 2019, he joined Bayern Munich as assistant to Hansi Flick, helping the club to a remarkable treble in his first season, winning the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and UEFA Champions League.<\/p>\n
He went on to be part of the Bayern backroom team that secured further silverware the following year \u2014 including the UEFA Super Cup, DFL Supercup and FIFA Club World Cup \u2014 before following Flick to the German national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.<\/p>\n
Rohl now takes the reins at Ibrox as Rangers look to turn their season around. His first match in charge will come on Thursday against SK Brann in the UEFA Europa League.<\/p>\n
Speaking after his appointment, Rohl said: \u201cIt is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of head coach at such an incredible club, recognised around the world. I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe expectations here are clear. The fans want to see results now \u2014 my mentality and experience is to think in exactly the same way and I have belief in the players that we can achieve this.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have no time to waste, we start straight away. I respect that trust is earned and understand we have to give the supporters confidence in what we are doing by showing it on the pitch from the start. Rangers is built on a tradition of hard work, unity and success \u2014 that is exactly what you will get from me and what I want my team to represent for all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh said Rohl’s appointment marked a key moment in the club\u2019s ambitions: \u201cWe\u2019re very pleased to welcome Danny to Rangers, an ambitious coach who shares the club\u2019s hunger for progress and success. His experience at elite level, in high pressure environments, makes him a strong fit for what we expect here.<\/p>\n
\u201cDanny impressed us with his vision, his character, and his understanding of what Rangers stands for. We believe he can help restore pride, momentum, and ultimately success.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vice-chairman Paraag Marathe added: \u201cThis has been a thorough process to ensure we identified the right person to lead the club forward. Danny clearly has tactical intelligence and a hunger to match the ambitions of Rangers. With Danny at the helm, we intend to compete through every minute on the pitch in all competitions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chief executive Patrick Stewart said the club are confident Rohl can reinvigorate the season: \u201cDanny brings real conviction, clarity and leadership to the role. We know results this season have fallen below our expectations, but with Danny and his staff in place, we\u2019re confident we can get this season back on track.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sporting director Kevin Thelwell added: \u201cDanny has the qualities required to succeed here, allied with being an exceptional coach. He has worked in some of the most demanding football environments in the world, where winning is the only expectation, and we believe that background has prepared him for Rangers. His job will be to get the best out of the players and build a team that, first and foremost, wins.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rohl takes charge with immediate effect and will lead Rangers into European action later this week as he begins his tenure at Ibrox.<\/p>\n
