{"id":184800,"date":"2026-08-05T16:29:01","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T15:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renfrewshire24.co.uk\/sport\/?p=184800"},"modified":"2026-08-05T16:29:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T15:29:01","slug":"renfrewshire-derby-provides-early-league-one-test-for-bishopton-and-st-mirren","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renfrewshire24.co.uk\/sport\/2026\/08\/05\/renfrewshire-derby-provides-early-league-one-test-for-bishopton-and-st-mirren\/","title":{"rendered":"Renfrewshire derby provides early League One test for Bishopton and St Mirren"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first Renfrewshire derby of the new Barclays Scottish Women&#8217;s League One season takes place on Sunday as Bishopton Ladies travel to face St Mirren Women at Mossedge.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Bishopton head into the match with confidence after opening their campaign with a victory over Queen of the South, while St Mirren begin their league season after their opening fixture did not go ahead following Armadale Thistle&#8217;s withdrawal from the division.<\/p>\n<p>The derby is an early opportunity for both clubs to make a statement in a league where each will have ambitions of challenging near the top of the table.<\/p>\n<p>For Bishopton, the match is another milestone in the club&#8217;s rapid rise through the Scottish women&#8217;s football pyramid.<\/p>\n<p>They secured promotion as SWFL Central-West champions after an outstanding campaign, winning 19 of their 20 league matches and scoring 152 goals. Their season also ended with SWFL League Cup success.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge now is to carry that form into League One against stronger opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Bishopton head coach Steven King said: &#8220;This is a great fixture for us. To have been promoted to the national leagues and be playing clubs the size of St Mirren shows the progress we&#8217;ve made.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our mindset isn&#8217;t &#8216;happy to be here&#8217; though and we&#8217;ll be looking to make the most of Sunday&#8217;s great start and kick on to challenge for the league title.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>St Mirren will be aiming to put last season&#8217;s disappointment behind them after narrowly missing out on promotion. The Buddies finished runners-up behind Elgin City and will be determined to go one better this season.<\/p>\n<p>Manager Kate Cooper said: &#8220;I think it was disappointing that the circumstances were as they were, but we&#8217;re excited. It&#8217;s really good for us to be doing our first fixture against Bishopton.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;ve put together a strong squad for the season ahead, so it will be a really good game.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve recruited well over the summer, but we&#8217;ve also recruited quite a lot of younger players, so it&#8217;s looking at them and how they step up into the women&#8217;s game.
