Thorn Athletic and Bonnyton Thistle shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Thorn Athletic Sports Academy on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

Corey Pearson gave Thorn the lead from the penalty spot in the 10th minute before Bonnyton substitute Louis Kerr equalised with a second-half penalty.<\/p>\n

The match also saw Thorn striker Nathan McLelland forced off early, with the club later confirming he had suffered a broken collar bone.<\/p>\n

Bonnyton created the first opportunity inside the opening minute when Aidan McGee sent an effort wide, before Thorn responded with a shot over the bar.<\/p>\n

There was an early stoppage when Bonnyton goalkeeper Dylan Caddis required treatment following a challenge.<\/p>\n

Thorn were then forced into a change in the ninth minute as McLelland went off and David McKenna came on.<\/p>\n

A minute later, the home side were ahead. Thorn were awarded a penalty and Pearson converted from the spot to make it 1-0.<\/p>\n

Thorn threatened again as the half progressed. Pearson sent a cross towards McKenna in the 23rd minute, but the substitute could not quite stretch far enough to make contact.<\/p>\n

Bonnyton had an opportunity from a corner in the 31st minute when Kris Chisholm’s delivery found Jace McCulloch, whose header went off target.<\/p>\n

Liam McWilliams was also called into action to save a Bonnyton effort before Thorn created another chance shortly before the break. Pearson found Michael Moynihan, who crossed towards McKenna, but his effort went over the goalmouth.<\/p>\n

Thorn went into half-time with their 1-0 advantage intact.<\/p>\n

The home side came close to doubling their lead six minutes into the second half when McKenna stretched to reach the ball and saw his effort strike the post.<\/p>\n

McGee then sent an effort narrowly over for Bonnyton as the visitors looked for a way back into the game.<\/p>\n

Bonnyton made a double change on the hour, with Chisholm and Ryan Kennedy replaced by Dylan Howarth and Kerr.<\/p>\n

Kerr soon made an impact.<\/p>\n

McGee was brought down inside the penalty area by McWilliams and the referee pointed to the spot. Kerr converted the resulting penalty to bring Bonnyton level at 1-1.<\/p>\n

Both sides continued looking for a winner. Kerr later tested McWilliams from a free-kick, while Thorn’s MacAuley Wilson sent an effort to the right of goal from a set-piece.<\/p>\n

Wilson was booked in the 87th minute following an incident which left Bonnyton substitute Hewitt requiring treatment.<\/p>\n

Ross Denny had one final attempt for Thorn in stoppage time, but his effort went wide and the points were shared.<\/p>\n

Thorn manager Derrick McMillan felt the midweek encounter had lacked quality.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cYeah, it was a game that lacked real quality I thought from start to finish.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a typical midweek game, it felt a bit flat. Before the game, boys coming from the work, whatever, after a hard game Saturday, it just wasn’t great.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought first half we were okay, second half we just didn’t do the things that we’re good at that’s got us points in the previous weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

McMillan nevertheless believes Thorn’s opening matches have shown they can compete at First Division level.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI think we’ll play three of the teams that will be in the top six so to get, you know, four points out of that is maybe not that amazing but it means we’re competing, which is great.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we’ve still got a lot to go, a lot to learn at this level but I think we’re on a decent place.\u201d<\/p>\n

The point leaves Thorn fourth in the West of Scotland Football League First Division with 10 points from five matches. They have won three, drawn one and lost one, scoring 12 goals and conceding three.<\/p>\n

Thorn are two points behind Threave Rovers and Thorniewood United, while Lesmahagow Juniors sit third on the same points total as Thorn.<\/p>\n

Attention now turns to the South Region Challenge Cup, with Thorn travelling to face St Andrews United in the first round.<\/p>\n

McMillan said: \u201cSt Andrews, I’ve seen last night, East of Scotland Premier League, very good side had a good result through in Blackburn so I’m looking forward to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt gives you a wee chance to reset the cups and I’m not saying I don’t want to come win one of the cups I mean, who doesn’t? But it gives us a wee chance to reset, work on a couple of things and you know, we’ll give it our best.\u201d<\/p>\n
