It was a mixed weekend for Renfrewshire’s men’s football sides, with Johnstone Burgh and Glenvale celebrating wins while Renfrew and Thorn Athletic suffered defeats.<\/p>\n
Burgh edged Newton Stewart 3-2 in the Scottish Lowland League West, while Glenvale progressed in the Scottish Communities Cup with a 3-0 victory over Montrose Roselea.<\/p>\n
Renfrew remain without a win after losing 3-1 to Caledonian Braves, while Thorn went out of the Scottish Communities Cup on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Blairgowrie.<\/p>\n
Renfrew’s difficult start to the season continued with a 3-1 defeat to Caledonian Braves at New Western Park.<\/p>\n
The visitors did the damage during the first half, with Ross McNeil opening the scoring after 23 minutes before Struan Thompson doubled the advantage four minutes later.<\/p>\n
Connor McLaren made it 3-0 in the 33rd minute when he scored directly from a free-kick on the edge of the box.<\/p>\n
Renfrew goalkeeper Danny McLeay made several saves as Caledonian Braves continued to threaten.<\/p>\n
The home side improved after the break and Logan Punton pulled one back in the 77th minute.<\/p>\n
Renfrew were given another opportunity to reduce the deficit when they were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute, but Caledonian Braves goalkeeper Ross Connelly made the save.<\/p>\n
The 3-1 defeat leaves Renfrew still searching for their first win of the season.<\/p>\n
It follows their South Region Challenge Cup exit the previous weekend, when Glasgow University, who play three tiers below Renfrew, knocked them out with a 5-3 win at Petershill Park.<\/p>\n
There was better news for Johnstone Burgh as Stevie Farrell’s side secured a 3-2 win over Newton Stewart at Keanie Park.<\/p>\n
Mark Durnan opened the scoring in the 39th minute after Mark Barrowman headed Ian McShane’s corner into his path, allowing Durnan to fire home from eight yards.<\/p>\n
Burgh doubled their advantage before half-time. Thomas Orr did well on the left before finding Broque Watson, who made it 2-0 in the 45th minute.<\/p>\n
Newton Stewart pulled one back through Marc Whyte after 61 minutes, but Burgh responded five minutes later.<\/p>\n
Orr was again the provider, squaring the ball for Watson to score his second of the afternoon and restore Burgh’s two-goal advantage.<\/p>\n
Aaron Drysdale made it 3-2 in the 81st minute, but Burgh held on to secure all three points.<\/p>\n
Watson was named Man of the Match following his two goals, while the victory moved Johnstone Burgh up one place to ninth in the table with eight points from five matches.<\/p>\n
Glenvale made a strong start to their Scottish Communities Cup campaign with a 3-0 first-round victory over Montrose Roselea at Ferguslie Sports Centre.<\/p>\n
Mark Munro put Glenvale ahead after just five minutes, curling his effort into the top corner.<\/p>\n
Ewan Grant doubled the lead in the 18th minute when he broke through and finished low into the corner.<\/p>\n
Grant struck again just four minutes later, capitalising on an error to make it 3-0 after only 22 minutes.<\/p>\n
There were no further goals after the break. Glenvale continued to create opportunities, with Montrose Roselea goalkeeper Josh Gray making several saves.<\/p>\n
Glenvale finished the match with ten men when L. Comaskey was dismissed following a second booking, but the Paisley side saw out the match to progress to the next round.<\/p>\n
Thorn Athletic’s Scottish Communities Cup campaign ended in a penalty shootout defeat away to Blairgowrie.<\/p>\n
The sides were goalless at half-time before David McKenna headed Thorn into the lead after 55 minutes.<\/p>\n
Thorn remained in front until the closing stages, when Rian Robertson equalised for Blairgowrie in the 85th minute to take the tie to penalties.<\/p>\n
Blairgowrie converted all five of their penalties, while Ben Lauchlan missed for Thorn as the home side won the shootout 5-3.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere in the Scottish Lowland League West, Kilwinning Rangers beat Largs Thistle 2-0 with late goals from Murray MacKintosh and Ryan Wilson.<\/p>\n
Cumbernauld Colts and Dalbeattie Star shared the points in a 2-2 draw. Danny Hatfield and Harrison Howe scored for Colts, with Gravine Kalala and Kyle Higgins on target for Dalbeattie.<\/p>\n
Clydebank recorded the biggest victory of the day with a 7-1 win over Gretna 2008. Neil McLaughlin scored twice, with Kian Leslie, Nicky Little, Chris McGowan, Josh Jack and Oisin McHugh also finding the net. Josh Galloway scored Gretna’s goal, while Luke McMurtrie was sent off in the 85th minute.<\/p>\n
Troon came from behind to win 3-1 at Beith Juniors. Daniel Finnigan gave Beith the lead before goals from Stephen Bronsky, Callan Veitch and Kyle Gilroy turned the match around.<\/p>\n
