Johnstone Burgh suffered late heartbreak as they lost 1-0 to Largs Thistle under the lights in this evening’s Scottish Lowland League West match at Barrfields Park, Largs.<\/p>\n

Burgh manager Stevie Farrell made three changes from the starting XI that defeated New Elgin 5-0 at Nicol-Togneri Park last Saturday (19th September). Out went Luke Scullion, Scott Williamson and Del Esplin, and in came Brett Long, Lewis King and Broque Watson.<\/p>\n

The home side had the first chance of the match in the 5th minute as Liam Lapsley showed a brilliant turn of pace to run through on goal, but his low right-foot shot from 14 yards was well saved by Johnstone Burgh goalkeeper Brett Long.<\/p>\n

Largs Thistle had made a fast start and had another chance to score in the 14th minute. Brett Long failed to hold a cross and the ball fell to Will Sewell just 2 yards from goal, but his right-foot shot was well blocked by Lewis King.<\/p>\n

The Theesel came close to opening the scoring yet again in the 24th minute when Will Sewell showed some great skill in the box to create himself an opening, but his low left-foot shot from 12 yards was superbly saved by Brett Long.<\/p>\n

The next chance of the match came for the away side in the 30th minute as Kristopher Kerr’s pass from the left wing found Aaron Mason, but his first-time left-foot shot from 18 yards went just wide of the left-hand post.<\/p>\n

The Burgh’s next chance came in the 32nd minute when Max Kerr’s corner kick from the left-hand side found Mark Barrowman, but his free header from 6 yards flashed just over the crossbar.<\/p>\n

The home side were the next to threaten in the 36th minute when the ball broke to Blair Devine 25 yards from goal, but his low right-foot shot was saved by Brett Long.<\/p>\n

Largs Thistle came extremely close to taking the lead in the first minute of first-half stoppage time as Will Sewell laid the ball off to Adam Aird, who, from 25 yards, curled a superb first-time right-foot shot off the underside of the crossbar.<\/p>\n

The final chance in the first half came for Johnstone Burgh a minute later when Aaron Mason’s brilliant ball into the box from the left wing was met by Kristopher Kerr, but his first-time left-foot shot from 6 yards flashed just wide of the left-hand post.<\/p>\n

The Keanie Park side started the second half well and had a chance to score in the 55th minute when Aaron Mason had a clear sight of goal, but his right-foot shot from 20 yards flew just wide of the left-hand post.<\/p>\n

The away side were next to threaten again just two minutes later as Ian McShane found himself in a good position 20 yards from goal, but he lashed his right-foot shot well wide of the right-hand post.<\/p>\n

The Burgh had been the more dangerous-looking team in the second half and, in the 78th minute, they had a great chance to take the lead. Max Kerr’s brilliant cross from the right-hand side found Kristopher Kerr unmarked at the back post, but with just Largs goalkeeper George O’Connor to beat, the former Hurlford United forward headed the ball just over the crossbar from 6 yards.<\/p>\n

As second-half stoppage time approached, Largs Thistle delivered the fatal blow to Johnstone Burgh as they scored the goal that would deliver them the three points in the 90th minute of the match. Liam McVey launched a right-foot cross into the box that found Will Sewell at the back post. Sewell then headed the ball into the danger area and the Burgh defence could not find a way to clear the ball as it broke to Josh Gilmour, who lashed a powerful left-foot volley into the net from 12 yards.<\/p>\n

Johnstone Burgh couldn’t find an equaliser in the five minutes of added time, and Largs Thistle saw the game out to secure a 1-0 win, which saw them move up to 2nd place in the table, just 2 points behind league leaders Kilwinning Rangers.<\/p>\n

After tonight’s result, Johnstone Burgh dropped one place to 9th in the table, remaining on 15 points from 9 matches played.<\/p>\n
