Out went Kian Gilday and Aaron Mason, and in came Thomas Orr and most recent signing Adam Livingstone.

The Keanie Park side had the first chance of the match in the 9th minute when Thomas Orr had a sight of goal, but his low left-foot shot from 18 yards was saved by Newton Stewart goalkeeper Mark Thomson.

Newton Stewart were next to threaten in the 16th minute as the ball broke to Charlie Caygill, who then produced a low, powerful right-foot shot from 20 yards that was deflected wide of the right-hand post.

The Burgh came close to taking the lead in the 18th minute when Kristopher Kerr’s curling right-foot cross from the left wing sailed over Mark Thomson. However, it then came off the junction of the crossbar and the right-hand post before bouncing to safety.

The away side had another chance to open the scoring in the 23rd minute when Kristopher Kerr went on a powerful run into the left-hand side of the box. He then found Max Kerr at the back post with a left-foot cross, but his diving header from six yards flashed wide of the right-hand post.

The Creesiders had a half-chance to open the scoring in the 25th minute as Keir Halliday found himself in some space, but his left-foot shot from 25 yards went over the crossbar.

The final chance of the first half fell to Johnstone Burgh in the 30th minute. Max Kerr created some space for himself on the right-hand side of the box, but his low left-foot shot from 12 yards was well saved by Mark Thomson.

Half-time: 0-0

Newton Stewart started the second half well and came close to opening the scoring in the 57th minute. Club captain Marc Whyte went on a driving run towards goal before firing a powerful right-foot shot from 28 yards, but the ball flew just wide of the left-hand post.

The home side came even closer to scoring a minute later as Robert Middleton was first to react to a ball into the box, but saw his first-time left-foot volley crash off the crossbar. A huge relief for the Burgh.

The Creesiders’ pressure paid off as they opened the scoring in the 60th minute. Brett Long was rather hesitant in clearing the ball and paid the ultimate price as Charlie Caygill nicked the ball off him, then lashed a powerful left-foot shot from 16 yards into the top right-hand corner of the net.

The Keanie Park side had a shout for a penalty in the 65th minute when Del Esplin made a driving run into the box and appeared to be impeded, but the referee waved play on.

The Burgh started to up the tempo and came extremely close to levelling the match in the 68th minute. The ball broke to Sam Jamieson in the box, who made a clever turn to set himself up for a sight of goal, but his low right-foot shot was brilliantly saved by Mark Thomson.

The away side had another chance in the 70th minute as Kristopher Kerr ran into the right-hand side of the box, but his left-foot shot was saved by the impressive Thomson.

Johnstone Burgh’s next chance to score came in the 73rd minute when Max Kerr lined up a direct free-kick around 20 yards from goal. His high, curling left-foot strike was heading towards the top right-hand corner of the net, but once again Mark Thomson produced a sensational save.

Newton Stewart were defending for their lives, but almost scored a second goal against the run of play in the 81st minute. Martin McClorey found himself in space on the right-hand side of the box, but his low right-foot shot from 10 yards went just wide of the left-hand post.

In the 83rd minute, the Creesiders were reduced to 10 men after Fraser Anderson committed a late tackle on Scott Williamson and was shown a second yellow card by the referee.

The Johnstone side continued to pile on the pressure and yet again came close to levelling the match in the 86th minute. Zak McKay, who was making his first appearance for the club, showed some nice footwork on the right side of the box to create an opening, but his right-foot shot from 12 yards went over the crossbar.

The Burgh came closer still to an equalising goal in the 89th minute when Stuart Faulds’ cross from the right found Mark Durnan at the back post, but he could only divert the ball off the underside of the crossbar from six yards, much to the dismay of the away support.

Johnstone Burgh finally got the goal their play deserved in the 90th minute of the match when Sam Jamieson laid the ball off to Broque Watson, who fired a first-time right-foot shot from 19 yards. The ball then took a wicked deflection and looped over Mark Thomson, going straight into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

The away side were now pushing for their next, and hopefully winning, goal and came extremely close in the third minute of added time. Ian McShane’s first-time right-foot shot from 10 yards looked to be heading into the right-hand corner of the net, but Mark Thomson made yet another brilliant save.

There were no more clear-cut chances before the referee blew the whistle to confirm that the match would be heading to extra time.

Full-time: 1-1

The Keanie Park side started the first period of extra time with immediate intent and almost took the lead in the 94th minute. Ian McShane lined up a direct free-kick 20 yards from goal, but his curling right-foot shot came off the crossbar.

Just a minute later, the Johnstone side came close again as Max Kerr had a sight of goal from around 20 yards, but his low right-foot shot was saved by Thomson.

The Burgh continued to pile the pressure on the Creesiders and created yet another chance when Ian McShane found himself with space outside the box, but his low right-foot shot from 20 yards flashed just wide of the right-hand post.

Johnstone Burgh were not to be denied, though, and their pressure finally paid off as they took the lead in the 100th minute. Kristopher Kerr made a driving run into the left-hand side of the box and his superb left-foot cross found Broque Watson, who produced a clinical, first-time, right-foot volley into the back of the net from eight yards.

The last chance of the first half of extra time came for the away side when Sam Jamieson’s superb pass put Max Kerr through on goal, but his low left-foot shot from 14 yards was saved by Mark Thomson.

Extra-time half-time: 1-2

Newton Stewart were still in the game and had a half-chance to level the match in the 110th minute. Marc Whyte had a chance to test Brett Long from 20 yards, but his right-foot shot went wide of the left-hand post.

Johnstone Burgh got their third goal of the afternoon in the 112th minute when Max Kerr was in space just outside the box. From 20 yards, he fired a left-foot shot into the back of the net, but Mark Thomson will have felt he should have saved it.

The final chance of the match fell to the Burgh as Max Kerr once again found himself in space outside the box, but this time his left-foot shot from 20 yards went wide of the left-hand post.

The referee blew the full-time whistle, making it Johnstone Burgh who take their place in tomorrow evening’s Scottish Gas Men’s Scottish Cup second-round draw.

After extra time: Newton Stewart 1-3 Johnstone Burgh

Newton Stewart goal: Caygill 60

Johnstone Burgh goals: Watson 90, 100; M.
