Johnstone Burgh FC has announced with deep sadness the passing of one of their most devoted supporters, Alec Newton.
Alec was a life-long Burgh fan who could often be found on the Keanie Park terraces, cheering on his team home and away. He was a familiar face to players, coaches, volunteers and fellow supporters, and was always part of the crowd on away day bus trips.
Despite ill health in recent months, Alec managed to attend one final, unforgettable match – Burgh’s Scottish Junior Cup triumph over Tranent in June. It was a fitting farewell for a man whose passion for the club never faded.
He had a special fondness for Burgh favourites Craig “Zee” Menzies and captain Del Esplin, and one of his lasting memories was celebrating the Cup victory alongside them.
The club described Alec as “very well loved” and said he will be remembered with great affection. Johnstone Burgh will request permission for a minute’s silence before Saturday’s home match against Arniston Rangers as a mark of respect.
Alec is survived by his sons and daughter, and the thoughts of everyone at Johnstone Burgh are with his family at this difficult time.
