The first Renfrewshire derby of the new Barclays Scottish Women’s League One season takes place on Sunday as Bishopton Ladies travel to face St Mirren Women at Mossedge.
Bishopton head into the match with confidence after opening their campaign with a victory over Queen of the South, while St Mirren begin their league season after their opening fixture did not go ahead following Armadale Thistle’s withdrawal from the division.
The derby is an early opportunity for both clubs to make a statement in a league where each will have ambitions of challenging near the top of the table.
For Bishopton, the match is another milestone in the club’s rapid rise through the Scottish women’s football pyramid.
They secured promotion as SWFL Central-West champions after an outstanding campaign, winning 19 of their 20 league matches and scoring 152 goals. Their season also ended with SWFL League Cup success.
The challenge now is to carry that form into League One against stronger opposition.
Bishopton head coach Steven King said: “This is a great fixture for us. To have been promoted to the national leagues and be playing clubs the size of St Mirren shows the progress we’ve made.
“Our mindset isn’t ‘happy to be here’ though and we’ll be looking to make the most of Sunday’s great start and kick on to challenge for the league title.”
St Mirren will be aiming to put last season’s disappointment behind them after narrowly missing out on promotion. The Buddies finished runners-up behind Elgin City and will be determined to go one better this season.
Manager Kate Cooper said: “I think it was disappointing that the circumstances were as they were, but we’re excited. It’s really good for us to be doing our first fixture against Bishopton.
“They’ve put together a strong squad for the season ahead, so it will be a really good game.
“We’ve recruited well over the summer, but we’ve also recruited quite a lot of younger players, so it’s looking at them and how they step up into the women’s game. They’re very talented and we’re looking forward to the season ahead.”
The match kicks off at 2.45pm on Sunday at Mossedge in Paisley.
