Glasgow University produced a South Region Challenge Cup upset on Saturday as they knocked Lowland League West side Renfrew out with a 5-3 victory.
The result was the biggest surprise involving a Renfrewshire side in the first round, with Glasgow University playing three levels below Renfrew.
There was no league action for the local sides, with the weekend given over to cup football. Johnstone Burgh did not have a match.
Renfrew travelled to face Glasgow University in the first round of the South Region Challenge Cup, with the Lowland League West side playing opposition three levels below them.
The hosts produced the shock of the round with a 5-3 victory and later described the result as a “massive upset”.
Renfrew had the first big opportunity when Aedan Gilfedder played Jordan Moore through, but his effort was blocked.
Glasgow University then took control. A flowing move produced the opening goal before the hosts doubled their advantage from the penalty spot.
A third followed before the break to leave Renfrew facing a 3-0 deficit at half-time.
Renfrew responded after the restart. Olly Smith headed home from a corner to make it 3-1.
David McCallum then won a header before Div applied the final touch to reduce the deficit to one.
Renfrew completed their comeback when Smith’s header came back off the bar and Jordan Moore applied the finish to make it 3-3.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men and, despite fighting their way back into the tie, they were unable to hold on.
Glasgow University restored their lead late on to make it 4-3 before adding a fifth to complete a 5-3 victory and send Renfrew out in the first round.
There was better news for Glenvale, who produced an impressive cup result of their own with a 7-1 victory over Creetown.
