Gleniffer Thistle Women were knocked out of the Scottish Women’s Cup after a 5-4 extra-time defeat away to Airdrie on Sunday.
Gleniffer led 2-0 and 3-1 during an end-to-end first-round tie before Airdrie fought back to take the game into extra time.
Cara McInally opened the scoring for Gleniffer with a good finish before Tasha Marshall doubled the advantage, finishing first time with her left foot after being played through.
Airdrie pulled one back before the interval to leave Gleniffer 2-1 ahead at half-time.
McInally struck again in the second half after Gleniffer won possession in midfield, restoring their two-goal advantage at 3-1.
Airdrie responded to make it 3-2, while McInally was denied a hat-trick by a save from the home goalkeeper.
With the game entering the 90th minute, Airdrie won a corner and forced home an equaliser following a scramble in front of goal.
There was further drama in injury time when Gleniffer goalkeeper Leigh Skelton was shown a straight red card following a mistimed challenge.
Marianna Bottiglieri took over in goal, with the resulting Airdrie free-kick going over the bar as the match finished 3-3 after 90 minutes.
Airdrie scored twice in quick succession during extra time to move 5-3 ahead against the ten players of Gleniffer.
Hannah Cameron gave Gleniffer hope with a free-kick from around 35 yards, her second such goal of the season, to reduce the deficit to 5-4.
Gleniffer pushed for another equaliser, but Airdrie held on to secure their place in the next round.
Hannah Colquhoun was named Gleniffer’s player of the match for her performance.
Gleniffer will now return to league action as they look to get back to winning ways.
Elsewhere in the first round, St Mirren were also knocked out after a 3-1 defeat by Queen of the South.
Arbroath and Edinburgh South progressed on penalties following draws with Thornton Hibs and Dunfermline Athletic respectively, while Jeanfield Swifts defeated Giffnock on penalties after their tie finished 2-2.
Cambusdoon, Dalkeith Thistle, Inverurie Locos, Shetland and Stoneywood Parkvale also booked places in the next round.
