Birkmyre 15 – 31 Cumbernauld
Arnold Clark West Division 2
Saturday, 18th April 2026, 3pm

Birkmyre suffered a home defeat in their penultimate league match of the season. In a game that saw five yellow cards, and could and should have seen more, Cumbernauld were able to see it out with 13 men on the pitch to secure a 31-15 win.

Cumbernauld drew first blood in the match. After enjoying some sustained early pressure, they touched down in the 5th minute for a converted try. Birkmyre hit back 10 minutes later from a tap-and-go penalty 10 metres out. Lucas Reid and Louis Hoodless both carried well to set up the backs. The call came to move the ball wide, and it made its way to centre Ross Moglia. From five metres out, he twisted and turned before stretching over the line for the score.

Birkmyre took the lead on 21 minutes. With Cumbernauld down a player following their first yellow card, the ball was worked wide and winger Jamie Haran forced his way over near the corner.

The home side held the lead for 10 minutes before the visitors scored their second converted try to move two points in front. There was controversy just before the break when Cumbernauld scored again. After a succession of rucks close to the Birkmyre line, the ball was carried across. The referee clearly signalled that the ball had been held up, but then reversed his own decision and awarded the score. Birkmyre’s Liam Nicholas was shown a yellow card in the process. That gave Cumbernauld a 21-10 lead at half-time.

Just two minutes into the second half, Cumbernauld received their second yellow card. Even with reduced numbers, they extended their lead 10 minutes into the half. In the 56th minute, they added a penalty to open up a 21-point advantage.

Cumbernauld could easily have seen red shortly after for a reckless high clear-out. It was completely missed by the referee despite being highlighted by both the players and the crowd. That could have been game-changing, as Cumbernauld continued to infringe at every opportunity.

The final 20 minutes were even in terms of play and possession. In the closing stages, the referee finally lost patience with Cumbernauld and issued two late yellow cards. It was well overdue, but too little too late for the Myre. Ross Moglia did manage to score a late consolation try as the clock went red.

Birkmyre now travel to Lochgilphead this Saturday for their final league match of the season against Mid Argyll. A bonus-point win would secure fourth spot in the league.
