Johnstone Burgh made it four consecutive league wins after a 2-1 victory over a spirited St Cadoc’s side under the lights at a chilly Keanie Park in Johnstone.
Burgh manager Murdo MacKinnon made three changes from the starting XI that lost 3-1 to Auchinleck Talbot on Saturday. Out went Malky McDonald, Matty Grant and Kyle Lafferty, with Stuart Faulds, Broque Watson and Aidan Gilmartin coming in.
St Cadoc’s made a fast start and had the first chance of the match in the 1st minute through Scott Ferguson, but his right-foot shot from 25 yards went well over the crossbar.
In the 2nd minute, it was the Burgh who had the next chance. Aaron Mason put a fine cross into the box to Aidan Gilmartin, whose header from 6 yards was brilliantly saved by Josh Quigley. The rebound fell to Blair Rossiter, but his shot from around 6 yards was well blocked.
St Cadoc’s were next to threaten and had a brilliant chance to open the scoring in the 6th minute. Patrick Gallagher got in behind the Burgh defence from a long ball to find himself one-on-one with Luke Scullion, but his shot from around 18 yards went wide of the right-hand post — a huge relief for the home side.
St Cadoc’s had made the better start and again came close in the 9th minute. Gallagher found himself through on goal once more, but just as he was about to pull the trigger from 8 yards, he was denied by Craig Menzies, who made a brilliant last-ditch tackle.
The visitors continued to impress and had another chance in the 11th minute. Scott Ferguson created space in the box, but his powerful left-foot shot from around 12 yards went just wide of the left-hand post.
It was an entertaining start and that theme continued in the 13th minute when Scott Forrester had a sight of goal from around 30 yards, but his effort went just over. Three minutes later, another chance came for the Burgh. Broque Watson played a neat pass to Aidan Gilmartin, who took a good first touch, but his right-foot shot from 8 yards went over.
The Burgh began to take control and came close in the 22nd minute. Gilmartin hooked a right-foot shot from around 10 yards that looked goalbound, but it was deflected just wide of the right-hand post, with Quigley rooted.
The Keanie Park side ramped up the pressure and came close again in the 27th minute when Blair Rossiter’s left-foot shot from 12 yards was well saved. Five minutes later, Gilmartin created space and, from a tight angle 12 yards out, unleashed a powerful left-foot shot that was somehow kept out by Quigley at his near post.
St Cadoc’s then turned defence into attack seconds later. Harrison Jack played a lovely through ball to Patrick Gallagher, who from around 8 yards forced a good save from Scullion. From that attack, the Burgh broke quickly, with Rossiter striking a powerful left-foot shot from 22 yards that grazed the left-hand post.
Johnstone Burgh were forced into an unexpected change in the 35th minute, with captain Craig Menzies limping off injured and replaced by Matty Grant.
The Burgh finally opened the scoring in the 42nd minute. Ian McShane delivered a fine cross from the left, which Scott Forrester met at the back post, leaping like a salmon to head down into the net from 6 yards.
The home fans wanted another before half-time — and got it. Aaron Mason fired a dangerous low ball across the face of goal and Broque Watson was there at the back post to knock it in from a yard out in the 44th minute.
Straight from the restart, St Cadoc’s almost pulled one back through Owen Adam, but his right-foot shot from 10 yards went wide in the 45th minute.
Johnstone Burgh went into the half-time break 2-0 up.
The gaffer made a change at half-time, with Darren Christie coming on for Aaron Mason.
The Burgh started the second half well and had a chance through Lewis King in the 50th minute, but his header from 10 yards went just wide following a cross from Ian McShane.
Darren Christie was next to threaten a couple of minutes later. The former Pollok man embarked on a fine solo run from midway inside the St Cadoc’s half before seeing his right-foot shot from 12 yards saved by Quigley. The rebound fell to Rossiter, but he could only find the side netting from 8 yards.
Quigley was called into action again in the 56th minute. Matty Grant whipped in a dangerous cross from the right to Broque Watson, whose header from 10 yards was brilliantly saved.
St Cadoc’s remained a threat on the counter and came close in the 58th minute when Leo Adam picked out Harrison Jack, but from 10 yards he could only shoot wide of the left-hand post.
Watson came close again in the 63rd minute, but once more Quigley was on hand to save his low shot from around 22 yards.
St Cadoc’s eventually pulled a goal back in the 66th minute. Scott Ferguson showed composure before slipping a pass to Ben Stoddart, who fired a low right-foot shot into the bottom-left corner from around 10 yards.
The Burgh looked to restore their two-goal cushion and came close in the 71st minute when Rossiter’s effort from 8 yards was deflected wide when it looked certain to go in.
The game became scrappy in the final stages, but St Cadoc’s had a big chance to equalise in the 80th minute. McDougall found himself one-on-one with Scullion, but the Burgh number one made a crucial save from around 14 yards.
The final 10 minutes, plus six minutes of added time, passed without any clear-cut chances, and the whistle confirmed a 2-1 victory for the home side.
After the win, Johnstone Burgh move up to 6th place on 36 points from 19 matches.
