Gleniffer Thistle were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Drumchapel United in the ScottishPower Regional Cup Group Central-West – Group 2.

Gleniffer started brightly and dominated possession, although Drumchapel remained dangerous on the break and Leigh Skelton was called upon to make a couple of good stops and interceptions.

The home side created several chances before Cara McInally made the breakthrough, smashing the ball home from the right-hand side of the 18-yard box.

It was not long before McInally struck again. Good football in midfield led to a through ball which found the forward, who lobbed the goalkeeper. The Drumchapel keeper managed to get a touch but could not keep it out.

Drumchapel pulled a goal back with practically the final attack of the first half. An awkward bounce from a ball into the Gleniffer defence caused confusion at the back, allowing the visitors to take advantage and score.

Gleniffer made two changes at half-time, with Rebecca Donegan replacing Sina Picken and Fallon Morris coming on for Annie Miller, who had suffered a head knock shortly before the interval.

Drumchapel changed their shape and began to see more of the ball in the second half, but Skelton and the Gleniffer defence initially kept them out.

Gleniffer continued to pose a threat on the break, but Drumchapel eventually found their equaliser after beating the offside trap down the right. The ball was squared into the centre and finished from close range to make it 2-2.

The match remained a physical contest, with both sides having half-chances and several close offside decisions going against each team before the points were shared.

McInally was praised for her two goals and work rate, while Hannah Colquhoun and Marianna Bottiglieri produced solid displays over the 90 minutes.

Gemma McElhinney was named Gleniffer Thistle’s Player of the Match for her performance at the back.

The draw leaves Gleniffer top of ScottishPower Regional Cup Group Central-West – Group 2 on four points from two matches.

Gleniffer now turn their attention to the Scottish Cup, where they will face Alloa Athletic at Ralston next week, with kick-off at 1.30pm.
