Bishopton stay top as Gleniffer win and Houston make senior league debut

Bishopton Ladies maintained their perfect start to the Barclays Scottish Women’s League One season as Renfrewshire’s women’s teams returned to action on Sunday, 27th September.

Bishopton recorded a 5-0 victory away to Dunfermline Athletic Women at the Dunfermline FC Training Centre.

Frankie Fern scored twice, with Hannah Coyle, Catriona McAllister and Cheryl Watt also on the scoresheet.

The result means Bishopton have won all five of their league matches this season, scoring 32 goals and conceding just three.

They sit top of League One with 15 points, level with Queen of the South Ladies but having played two games fewer.

Elsewhere in League One, Queen of the South won 2-1 away to Inverurie Loco Works Ladies, Cambusdoon Ladies beat Westdyke Ladies 2-1 and Giffnock SC Women defeated Airdrie CC Ladies by the same score.

St Mirren Women did not play and remain fifth in the table with nine points from five matches.

In SWPL 2, Renfrew Ladies suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Gartcairn at MTC Park.

Renfrew made the better start as Becky Downs opened the scoring to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Gartcairn responded to level before moving 2-1 ahead before half-time. The hosts added a third goal after the break to complete a 3-1 victory.

In the SWFL Central-West, Gleniffer Thistle collected three points with a 5-2 victory away to Dumbarton despite travelling with a depleted squad.

Gleniffer opened the scoring after Sara Paterson made a solo run into the box and squared the ball for Cara McInally to score from close range.

Dumbarton equalised following a quick throw-in and diagonal ball, with goalkeeper Kerry Ross unable to keep out the resulting effort.

Gleniffer regained the lead after another run from Paterson. Her shot was saved, but Tasha Marshall was on hand to score from the rebound and give Gleniffer a 2-1 half-time advantage.

Gleniffer started the second half on the front foot and Paterson made it 3-1 following a piece of individual skill inside the box.

Paterson then scored her second of the match, cutting in from the left before finding the corner to extend the lead to 4-1.

Dumbarton pulled one back from a free-kick awarded for handball on the edge of the box.

Gleniffer restored their three-goal advantage following a move down the right involving Colleen Cossar. The ball eventually reached Fallon Morris at the far side of the box and she scored her first goal for the club to complete the 5-2 victory.

Paterson was named Gleniffer’s player of the match after scoring twice and contributing to two of their other goals.

The result leaves Gleniffer top of the early Central-West table with four points from two matches.

Sunday also marked a milestone for Houston United as the club played its first-ever senior league match.

Houston travelled to the Donald Dewar Centre to face Drumchapel United and were beaten 16-0.

Before the match, Houston described the fixture as “another milestone” for the club as they prepared to take to the pitch for their first senior league game.

The other Central-West results saw Central Ladies beat Murieston United Women 5-1, while Cumbernauld Colts won 6-2 away to Linlithgow Rose CFC Ladies. Carron Ladies against West Park United was postponed.

Central-West action continues next Sunday, 4th October, when Houston United are due to host Dumbarton at Gryffe High School.
